How Our Log Splitter Ratings Are Calculated
First decide what the listing actually sells
We separate complete splitters from covers, wedges, pumps, cylinders and tractor-dependent attachments. Comparator eligibility requires a complete machine, a documented drive type within the page criteria, and an exact-ASIN captured average with a positive review count.
Three distinct hydraulic shortlists
The ranges are 20–30 ton gas, 5–7 ton electric hydraulic and 33–40 ton gas. Kinetic listings remain in the catalog and a dedicated guide because our captured review pool is too thin for an equivalent five-machine ranking. That is an evidence limitation, not a verdict against the mechanism.
What the specification component records
Stated force, drive type, maximum log length, orientation and cycle time are traced to verbatim listing fragments. They are manufacturer claims, not our measurements. Bigger force does not guarantee a better result for your wood.
Scoring formulas
Documented spec fit = 100 × [0.40 × min(stated tonnage / 40, 1) + 0.20 × documented drive type + 0.20 × documented maximum log length + 0.10 × documented orientation + 0.10 × documented cycle time], rounded to a whole number. Presence terms are 1 when the exact listing documents the attribute and 0 otherwise. Tonnage and cycle time are manufacturer claims, not measured results. A larger force claim does not establish faster work or suitability for every log.
Documentation completeness = 100 × [0.5 × min(feature bullets / 8, 1) + 0.3 × min(listing images / 5, 1) + 0.2 × (brand stated ? 1 : 0)], rounded to a whole number. Used when tonnage is not documented. This is listing documentation, not a physical test.
For review-backed comparisons the raw editorial score is 100 × [0.45 × (Amazon average / 5) × min(review count / 50, 1) + 0.35 × min(log10(1 + review count) / log10(5001), 1) + 0.20 × spec or documentation score / 100], rounded to a whole number. Reviews are captured for the exact ASIN. Low review counts are confidence-damped. Catalog items without captured reviews are not eligible for ranked comparisons. This is an editorial evidence index, not an Amazon customer rating or a physical test.
Display, order and ties
The displayed editorial rating is the raw blended score divided by 10, shown to one decimal on a 0-10 scale. There is no catalog normalization, rank interpolation, forced winner, forced floor or artificial gap. Equal scores remain equal: the available data does not justify a distinction. Ranking uses the unmodified raw score descending, then listing slug for exact ties; slug is a stable identifier, not a quality signal. The same raw score always has the same display rating in every shortlist. This is not a physical test result or an Amazon customer rating.
The full eligible pool is sorted before taking five machines. Different stated models or tonnages remain distinct; exact listing slugs break exact score ties without implying a quality difference. Amazon may display reviews shared across variations: an exact-ASIN observation records the displayed evidence, not a claim that every review discusses only that variant.
Freshness and omission
Collected offers and product media have a maximum 24-hour display window. Missing or expired values are hidden rather than estimated. This preview has no autonomous renewal configured, and the presence of a freshness guard is not a promise of twice-daily updates.
The planner is an explicit heuristic
Its tonnage bands and adjustments are editorial assumptions for research, not a manufacturer sizing table or engineering calculation. Knots, grain and model-specific log limits can invalidate a simple band. Always check the manual.
